Arene's Estate

Systema Delenda Est

Arene's Estate is Arene Flamewing's remote compound near Halghur Town, a refuge whose defenses make it uniquely valuable in the confrontation with Grand Paladin Nikhil. It first functions as a sanctuary for refugees and then as bait for a Bismuth-rank enemy, before surviving the annihilation that destroys the surrounding meeting site and becoming part of a world no longer governed by the System. Its changing use gives the estate an unusually concentrated role: it is simultaneously home, shelter, military resource, hostage site, and evidence of a new order taking shape.

Setting and Defensive Importance

Arene's Estate stands far enough from Halghur Town for Cato to use his weapon without immediately destroying the town itself. When Raine Talis and Leese Talis arrive through a Nexus, Arene is absent because Dyen's warning has sent the Platinums away, but her estate is the only suitable location available for the operation. The choice is not incidental. The distance provides room for a catastrophic strike, while the compound's active defenses prevent even a Bismuth from directly sensing whether Arene is present. Nikhil must physically enter the estate to verify the lure, turning the architecture into a deliberate blind spot in the System's hierarchy of perception.

The estate's defenses remain active despite its doors standing open. Raine and Leese reach the compound by sliding along its stone walls with Skating Steps, and the faint tracery of light along those walls confirms that the structure is still protected. This creates a productive contradiction: the open entrance appears exposed, yet the compound remains opaque to the enemy who matters most. Its security does not make the estate invulnerable, but it changes what can be known there, allowing Cato's allies to turn uncertainty into a weapon.

Refuge and Lure

The estate houses refugees, making evacuation the first practical obstacle in the plan to draw Nikhil into the wilderness. Raine and Leese cross the roughly twenty-mile distance from Halghur Town in about half an hour, using augmented bodies and movement Skills acquired through their free B-tier selections. Their haste is intensified by the wider crisis: Nikhil's presence has revoked the protective aegis formerly provided by Sydea's Platinums, while people trapped inside the cities cannot leave, and a single high-ranker is producing more violence and death than Cato previously had.

Arene nevertheless commits her home to the plan. Raine expects that Arene would dislike using the estate as bait, yet finds her already acting to evacuate its inhabitants. Arene appears in a burst of fire, wraps her whip around groups of refugees, and vanishes with them until only a few older Coppers remain in the courtyard. These are people who have not completed a dungeon or accumulated enough excess essence to reach peak Copper, and their presence makes the estate more than a tactical location: every minute spent preparing the trap carries the immediate responsibility of moving vulnerable civilians out of its blast radius.

The estate also becomes the place where treachery is performed and punished. Nikhil arrives, captures Arene, and treats Raine and Leese as compromised agents aligned with Cato. When Arene calls them traitors, Nikhil binds her with additional chains and lets the golden dome over the site fade. He seizes her farcaster and orders the sisters to contact Cato, disclose the meeting place, and report any changes. The compound's role therefore shifts from protected refuge to controlled hostage scene, with its defenses unable to prevent Nikhil from imposing his authority once he is physically inside.

Destruction and Survival

The estate is close enough to the meeting site to experience the consequences of Cato's attack without being erased by its center. Anti-electrons and anti-protons annihilate their counterparts, causing atoms to vanish into energy and breaking through the immunity shield that protects Nikhil. The resulting flash consumes the meeting site, leaves no survivors there, and gouges out a crater around the lingering entrance to a dungeon. The blast's radiation and thermal force ignite the sparse vegetation for miles, while the shockwave reaches Arene's compound and makes its walls tremble.

That tremor records the estate's narrow escape. The compound is close enough to be implicated in the violence, yet strong enough to remain standing, and Arene emerges above it freed from the chains that had held her. Her release is inseparable from the estate's military function: the home has served as the physical anchor for the deception, the custody scene, and the escape route that follows Cato's announcement that the Bismuth is dead. Cato immediately orders Raine and Leese to reach the portal, while his surviving orbital infrastructure begins an emergency de-orbit operation after Nikhil's projectile spell has wrecked much of it.

After the System

Later, Arene returns to the estate using technological wings rather than the teleportation powers she once possessed under the System. The flight is slower and louder than teleportation, but the wind, acceleration, and diving feel more immediate, as though the System had previously shielded her from the physical world. Her technological archive suggests that Calamity Lance should have been even more destructive than it was, linking the estate's later life to the uncertain capabilities of a post-System reality rather than to the old guarantees of rank and Skills.

The estate's surroundings reveal how thoroughly its meaning has changed. Arene lands in the yard, where edible crops grow from the soil and a cultivated field reaches toward a dead zone in which Cato's machines operate under Hirau's direction. Blooming green and blue plants stand against the withered grey-brown basin, while the estate itself is marked by brilliant yellows and oranges. The contrast makes the compound a visual boundary between reconstruction and mechanized devastation, organic life and industrial intervention, inherited home and transformed world.

Finally, the estate becomes a family place again. Arene's relatives come out to greet her, and children who can barely walk rush toward her; she kneels to gather them up as the flight pack folds its wings into a bulky backpack. The image does not erase the compound's history as a trap and battlefield. Instead, it establishes what the estate is being reclaimed for: not the System's hierarchy, not Nikhil's punishment, and not permanent militarization, but continued domestic life amid a damaged landscape. Its decisive significance lies in that tension. Arene's Estate survives because it can be weaponized, but its later value lies in the possibility that survival may once again make room for shelter, cultivation, and family.
